Sonya Maher

After winning a music scholarship to Methodist Ladies' College in Claremont, Western Australia, Sonya toured Europe with the school as Concertmaster of the MLC Orchestra, performing in many prestigious Eisteddfods and Halls. Sonya graduated from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) in 2011 with a Bachelor of Music Performance and in 2013 completed her Honours in Music Performance at the University of Western Australia. In 2015 she completed a Graduate Diploma in Music Education. With over 15 years performance experience, Sonya has studied with some of Australia's best violinists and has performed in a wide variety of concerts and festivals both as soloist and an ensemble member. Highlights include being awarded in the UWA Flora Bunning Memorial Prize for Chamber Music in 2014, being a finalist in the Open Section of the Fremantle Eisteddfods (WA) in 2012, being Concertmaster for WAAPA's season of the opera 'Die Fledermaus' conducted by visiting conductor Brett Weymark, and taking part in a ten day string workshop at a kibbutz in Israel, where she had lessons and Masterclasses with teachers from the Jerusalem Academy of Music and members of the Jerusalem String Quartet. Most recently, Sonya has performed in the Sydney Contemporary Orchestra's New Music Festival 2016, in a String Quartet and the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, collaborating with some of Australia's best contemporary musicians and composers. Sonya teaches the violin both privately and in schools, and conducts and directs the string ensembles at a number of schools in Sydney.
